As one of the most iconic buildings in Nairobi, the Giraffe Manor has an extraordinary appeal!

It dates back to the 1930 decade, when European visitors first met in East Africa to enjoy safaris.

It features an imposing façade, elegant interior, sunny terraces and charming courtyards.

    But that is not all!

The most fascinating thing about Giraffe Manor is the herd of resident giraffes that visit guests in the morning and evening. They invade the windows with their long necks ... hoping for a treat, or a snack before retreating to their forest sanctuary.

"No food, no friendship", is what a Giraffes center coach alerts. So always have something on hand as you approach the giraffes. If not, these will ignore you or even give you a butt. (LOL)

    HISTORY

The boutique hotel covered with foliage was built on 1930 by Sir David Duncan.  And bought in the 1970 decade by Jock Leslie-Melville and his wife Betty.

On the verge of extinction, Jock and Betty moved two highly endangered baby Rothschild giraffes to the property. All as part of a breeding program,. This is in the hope of releasing breeding couples back into the wild to ensure future generations. It's called the Giraffe Center program.

The center has a reproduction program, a museum and ecological trails. In addition to an observation deck where tourists can find and feed the elegant Rothschild giraffes.

And the program gave excellent results!

From the time the couple started with this initiative, the number of giraffes grew from 120 to around 1.200.

In addition, the African Endangered Wildlife Fund (AFEW) operates conservation and education programs for Kenyan children and visitors from around the world.

Impact: For each guest staying at Giraffe Manor, a donation is made to the Fund - (AFEW) and its conservation projects.
